An account of the resource
In this oil on canvas created by Khalid Al-Rahal, the sense of the natural world is abstracted and turned upside down. The ambiguous setting gives the viewer a sense of uneasiness or lack of place. The human forms seem huddled together in a small mass in the center of the painting, and are represented in a nondescript manner. The color palette reads from very cool around the periphery of the painting, to a rusty glow in the center. The use of dappled brush work creates texture in the work.

In this textured rendition, Kahlid al-Rahal has carved out different humanoid shapes in various positions staged to the left two-thirds of the canvas. These figures are highlighted by a contrasting color scheme of vibrant blues with soft yellow and red tones. Reality is hinted at; yet never fully manifest in this composition as the subject matter has been abstracted by the reduction of detail and the opaque paint application.

The scene depicted by Al Jadar captures the pastoral aesthetic of an Iraqi Village. The painterly approach Al Jadar uses in forming the silhouettes of the landscape creates a sense of movement to an otherwise static scene of architectural elements. The color palette utilized ranges from the expected tones one would find in a landscape, that of beige, greys and dark blue yet are punctuated with jolts of crimson, ochre and teal. The overall effect is that of a dynamic and evocative scene of the Iraqi homeland.

"Iraq Village 5" is quite similar to others in the Village series. The depiction of architecture and persons in the painting is consistent with the other works of this subject matter executed by Al-Jadar. The colors are striking with the poignant azure blue of the sky and the stark white of the adobe life structures. The colorful scarves that are hanging in the marketplace, along with the people present in the space add life and vividness to the tableau.

Where as the previous work "Women in the Village Souq" shows the daily tasks of the females in the village, "River Scene 1" illustrates the tasks that the men of the village undertake daily. The scene depicts the readying of the vessels to go out onto the water to catch the days bounty of fish. The colors used by Al-Jadar in this painting are rich pigmentation of blues, purples, and beige with the punctuations of crimson and orange. The striking and flowing lines add to the feeling of movement and water in the piece.

In Iraqi Village 4, Al-Jadar relies on a much tighter composition than others in the series. The bulk of the paintings scene takes place in the foreground, focusing on the bare skeletal silhouettes of the trees, the cube like shapes of the houses, and a singular human presence in the lower left hand portion of the painting. The mountain range in the background of the painting looms over head, creating a somewhat oppressive and ominous feeling to this work.

Al-Jadar paints an image of the tranquility and rest that takes place at the end of a days work. The livestock is tethered to a post, the sky is darkening while shifting its hues from brilliant turquoise blue to dusky purples punctuated with silver orbs. The brilliantly colored fabrics which are attached to posts stretch in vertical bands across the middle of the painting. Al-Jadar manages to capture the solemn and peaceful quality of life at twilight.
